Drake was not happy when he discovered that Lil Wayne dated his past lover, Nicky Minaj

Drake pledged to ensure that the “Young Money ship was never sinking” on the lead single from his debut album, Thank Me Later, “Over.” However, by the time he was five years into his contract with the label—between the releases of “Bedrock” and “Truffle Butter”—the rap group had already Һit at least a few significant icebergs.

Lil Wayne: 'Nicki Minaj is an icon, a boss and a role model'

When Lil Wayne expressed his dissatisfaction with Cash Money Records, the parent company of Young Money, and its CEO, Birdman, in December 2014, it was the first clear indication that something might not be right in the worlds of Drizzy, Nicki Minaj, and Weezy. By his own admission, Weezy was set to release his much awaited album Tha Carter V in that same month, but the “Fireman” rapper claimed that his father figure Birdman was standing in the way of his plans. What followed was a bloody court strugglе that continues to this day.

Although the hip-hop community was startled to learn that Weezy and Baby were no longer as tight, it wasn’t the end of the world. Young Money was still together, after all, and with Drake, Nicki Minaj, and of course the unstoppable but shackled Weezy F at its core, there was always a good possibility the three might create some magic in the studio.

Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne Reunite for Young Money Show

Then came the summer of 2015. At that point, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend, claimed that Toronto’s favorite son had had some of the songs on his If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late record ghostwritten. A rather intense rap bаttle between the two that started nearly immediately still simmers beneath the surface of the rap community. It goes without saying that it was unreasonable to expect Nicki to be in the studio with Drizzy, much less openly interact with him.

Weezy didn’t publicly criticize Nicki’s boyfriend at the time, but he did show who was really on his side by performing “Back to Back” alongside Drizzy at a few shows. Even while we doubt there was ever any real controversy between Nicki and Weezy, she and Meek Milly might have had a very uncomfortable dinner table talk after seeing “I Get Crаzy (Part 2)”.

Nicki’s incredibly difficult position with Meek and Drizzy, plus Weezy’s ongoing spat with the Birdman made it seem unlikely that we would hear another song featuring the holy trinity of commercial rap in hip-hop anytime soon.

After that, Nicki ended her relationship with Meek Mill, and a few weeks later, she interrupted Weezy’s interview on an NFL Network live stream. It didn’t seem all that unlikely that the two could get on a track together after they hugged on television. Why not, given that Nicki had broken up with Meek Mill and that their relationship had never really been about beef anyway?

When pictures of Drizzy, Nicki, and Weezy appeared online at the beginning of February, the most powerful trio in the rap game was back together—at least in a picture. The three superstars may have finally broken down their imagined walls of hostility, even if there’s been no official word on whether or not they’ve entered the studio.
